“Not Tax For MPS” No “Tax For Us”-UTA DO?what will u do?

I have often taken jabs at our journalists in Kenya several times on this blog for not standing up to the powers that be for one issue or another but the latest developments in the Kenyan parliament where MPs have decided to revenge on these same journalists by passing a draconian bill aimed at muzzling the freedom of the press in Kenya is an outrage and has caused me to rally to their defense.

The issue at hand is that MPs do not want to pay tax on their allowances. And they do not want anyone to question that, especially the media.

So the arrest of Kenyan journalists on Jamhuri Day, Kenya’s 45th year of independence, hardly a day to celebrate, has forced me to eat back some of my words and to show respect for these journalists for standing up and I am joining them in solidarity to express outrage at what is going on.

As if we don’t have enough to deal with after our country went through a very trying time late last year and early this year, the MPs have instead decided to fortify themselves in parliament and go after anyone who defies them.

I am old enough to remember days when everyone used to ask, “are you allowed to say that?” or “are you sure you can write that?”

We cannot let ourselves go back to those days. It slowly creeps in, no one believes it is happening and once it’s in place, it takes years to undo.

One thing I’m wondering about is do these #$&*$&)*ards think they can muzzle everyone’s voice? Are they going to come after bloggers next?

Do they realise that even if they poured gasoline on all the media houses and set them alight, the information will still flow through and still hit the world headlines?

Do they realise that the more they act the way they are acting, the more determined we are to make sure all the voices and issues that need to be heard WILL BE HEARD no matter what blog or channel or source it comes out from?

WE WANT A KENYA THAT WE ALL CAN BE PROUD OF.

WE WANT A KENYA WHERE THERE IS NO INTIMIDATION.

WE WANT A KENYA WHERE THERE IS SECURITY FOR ALL.

WE WANT A KENYA WHERE PEOPLE FEEL SAFE OUTSIDE AFTER 6PM.

WE WANT A KENYA WHERE THE COMMON PERSON IS NOT INTIMIDATED BY A POLITICIAN.

WE WANT A KENYA WHERE OUR LEADERS REALISE THAT THEY ARE WORKING FOR US AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

WE WILL NOT BE DEFEATED UNTIL WE GET THE KENYA WE WANT.

WE HAVE MADE GREAT STRIDES BUT WE ARE NOT QUITE THERE YET.

WE CANNOT LET REPRESSION CREEP BACK INTO KENYA. ONCE POWER IS CONSOLIDATED INTO A FEW HANDS, WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

FOR ME, A TEENIE-TINY-LITTLE-BITTY BLOGGER IN THIS MIGHTY INTERNET, ALL I CAN DO IS TO KEEP THIS BLOG OPEN TO EXPOSE ANYONE OR ANYTHING THAT SEEKS TO HARM A FELLOW KENYAN AND TO KEEP KENYANS INFORMED OF THE DANGERS AND PIT HOLES THAT EXIST AHEAD AND AROUND US BECAUSE IGNORANCE IS NO DEFENSE.
