John Githongo made his name as a journalist who was keen to expose corruption. In the Kenya of President Daniel Arap Moi, he had plenty of targets. When Mwai Kibaki won the 2002 elections, Kenyans thought a new era had come and John Githongo accepted a job as President Kibaki’s anti-corruption czar. But when he tried to expose corruption in President Kibaki’s own government, he found it hard to make anyone listen. Two years on, no one has been brought to justice for his allegations. So what does this say about Kenya today? And how much has corruption got to do with the country’s current troubles?
